WHO: Monkeypox outbreak now a Public Emergency
I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern”, the World Health Organization’s Director, Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, announced on July 23, 2022 during a press conference.
According to the UN health agency, this Monkeypox outbreak has been transmitted primarily by close skin-to-skin contact, although the virus can also be passed by breath droplets and contaminated bedding.
Currently, there are over 16,000 cases of the monkeypox globally and according to the Centers for Disease Control, 2,891 cases have been confirmed in the United States.
The Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations highlighted that the community currently most affected by the global monkeypox outbreak outside Africa is the same initially reported to be affected in the early stages of HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Monkeypox vaccines are available, but their supplies are very limited.
WHO now has three active public health emergencies of international concern: COVID-19, polio and Monkeypox.
